Our Story
The Waldo Area Historical Society (W.A.H.S.) is dedicated to preserving, protecting, and promoting the rich history of Waldo, Florida and its surrounding communities. Our mission is to collect, document, and share the stories, artifacts, and traditions that shaped Waldo’s unique past. Through our museums, community programs, and historical research, we strive to inspire appreciation for Waldo’s heritage and ensure its legacy is cherished for generations to come.
Our Beginnings
The roots of the Waldo Area Historical Society trace back to December 2004, when Lucy Roe Cook and Penny Dodd hosted a Christmas Walking Tour originally planned by Ann Enck. This first event welcomed twenty-seven participants and spotlighted the history and anecdotes of local homes. Soon after, the group completed its first community project — the “Welcome to Waldo” mural was painted on the south wall of the historic Mullet Man building.
As community interest grew, the organization was formally incorporated in July 2005 and later expanded its name to the Waldo Area Historical Society. Since March 2009, the Society has proudly published The Waldo Phoenix, continuing its commitment to documenting local stories and celebrating community pride.
Our Museums
We are honored to operate two unique historical museums:
- The Waldo Area Historical Museum – Located at Waldo City Square, this museum houses artifacts, photographs, documents, and exhibits that highlight everyday life, local families, and significant moments in Waldo’s past.
- The Waldo Area Railroad Museum – Situated inside an authentic train caboose at Veteran’s Memorial Park, this museum showcases Waldo’s rich railroad history and its essential role in the development of our community.
Our Work & Impact
Over the years, the Society has proudly supported and led numerous community projects and events, including:
- The “Welcome to Waldo” Mural
